Waarom blog ik?

Bram De Smijter vraagt zich op zijn blog BubbleFish af waarom mensen bloggen. Hij neemt onder andere de metatale top 10 (waar deze blog in staat) en stelt:

Eens navragen bij deze 10 blogs wat hun beweegredenen zijn/waren om te bloggen, zou eens een goed idee kunnen zijn….

Wel Bram, om op je vraag te antwoorden: ik blog onder andere om bekendheid te verwerven in mijn vakgebied en omdat het een goede manier is om jezelf te dwingen de actualiteit te volgen (anders heb je niets om over te schrijven...). Maar even goed om mensen te leren kennen die over dezelfde dingen schrijven als ik, of die ook met mijn onderwerp (bloggen!) bezig zijn.

Oorspronkelijk had ik slechts één blog, in het Engels, maar daar ben ik mee gestopt omdat het een te grote mengelmoes werd: persoonlijke verhalen, meningen en werk-gerelateerde zaken door elkaar. Voor elk van die dingen was er wel een publiek, maar dat had aan de andere dingen geen boodschap. Dus heb ik alles maar opgesplitst, zodat alles wat werk-en-bloggen gerelateerd is nu op deze site komt, en persoonlijke zaken elders (al heb ik al lang geen tijd meer gehad om daar nog eens wat updates te doen).

Het klopt dat er in de top tien vaak naar elkaar wordt verwezen en dat het een 'clubje' lijkt, maar dit is oorzaak en gevolg omkeren. Ik ken de meeste mensen in het lijstje persoonlijk of heb ze al ontmoet, maar dat is omdat ze als 'bekende bloggers' op dezelfde evenementen aanwezig zijn waar ik ook uithang. De meesten onder hen zijn niet bekend geworden omdat ze elkaar kenden, ze hebben elkaar leren kennen omdat ze 'bekend' zijn geworden.

Ik denk dat je hetzelfde fenomeen zien (op veel grotere schaal) bij BV's of Hollywood-sterren. Ze zijn niet beroemd omdat ze op dezelfde feestjes rondhangen, maar ze hangen op dezelfde feestjes rond omdat ze beroemd zijn. Al moet je dat bekend en beroemd in de blogosfeer toch stevig relativeren.
