Mijn mp3-speler uit 1998

Volgens dit bericht op Slashdot is het tien jaar geleden dat de eerste commerciële mp3-speler uitkwam.  In het artikel wordt er ook melding gemaakt van de tweede speler die een paar maanden later uitkwam en die veel meer succes kende, de Diamond Rio PMP300.  Nu wil het toeval dat ik vorige week bij mijn ouders thuis in een lade mijn eerste mp3-speler heb teruggevonden... inderdaad, een Diamond Rio PMP300!

Het ding had maar liefst 32 megabyte geheugen aan boord, goed voor minstens tien of twaalf liedjes gecomprimeerd op 128Kb/s.  En compact dat het was: amper zo groot als een pakje sigaretten, veel kleiner dan een discman en ongevoelig aan schokken...

Ik ben helaas het speciale USB kabeltje kwijt waarmee ik mijn Rio aan de PC kon hangen, maar blijkbaar heeft het geheugen de tand des tijds goed weerstaan: toen ik daarnet een batterij in het toestel stopte, speelde het zonder problemen de liedjes die er nog op stonden (wat underground stuff van mp3.com, waar je toen nog gratis muziek kon downloaden van onbekende bands, een beetje zoals MySpace tegenwoordig dus).

Ahh, 1998...  Toen het internet nog via dial-up ging en Google nog in beta was...
