Een oer-blogger ontdekt Twitter

Oer-blogger Polskaya heeft zich ingeschreven op Twitter en hij is niet onder de indruk.  Hij schrijft:

Gisteren heb ik dan toch een account genomen om uit te vissen of Twitter mij iets anders kan bieden dan saaie nietszeggende fragmenten uit andere mensen hun onwaarschijnlijk boeiende leven. En wat leerde ik op één dag?
- M. heeft meer dan 60 cupcakes gebakken.
- C’s iMac kan alles.
- N. neemt er de tijd voor om te twitteren dat hij druifjes uit de bedrijfsmand gaat nemen vooraleer er geen meer zijn (komaan zeg , een slimmer mens pakt toch eerst die allerlaatste druiven en twittert er dan over in plaats van zijn tijd te verspelen aan een hoop zogenaamde sociale technologie).
- C gaat naar huis als zijn werk gedaan is. (het zou straffer zijn moest hij blijven)

(De M. van de cupcakes ben ik overigens zelf).  Wat hoopte hij echter wel te vinden op Twitter dan:

Mensen die Twitter gebruiken om proza of poëzie te verspreiden bijvoorbeeld, of zelfs nog maar gewoon interessantere dingen te zeggen hebben dan dat ze daarnet hun nagel hebben gebroken.

Tja, dan gaat het om het verkeerde medium, denk ik.  In de reacties onder zijn bericht heb ik Polskaya aangeraden deze video eens te bekijken:

Twitter gaat voor mij precies om die 'ruis', het kleine, het banale dat geen blogpost waard is. Voor mij (en veel andere mensen die ik op Twitter volg en die vaak ook thuis werken) is Twitter een virtuele koffiemachine waarrond roddels, interessante links en soms gewoon banale onzin wordt uitgewisseld.  Interessant?  Alleen als die mensen vrienden zijn en je in hun micro-leefwereld geïnteresseerd bent.  Anders kan ik Polskaya goed begrijpen.  Dat een random stranger koffie drinkt, interesseert mij niet.  Als bijvoorbeeld Tom echter koffie drinkt, dan vind ik dat grappig en leuk om te weten.  Waarom?  Omdat Tom een maat is.  Meer is er niet aan.  Om een bekend twitteraar te citeren: "It's Twitter, ejh".

Ik vond Twitter ook maar niks. Tot een week of 2 geleden, toen de Amerikaanse student journalistiek James Buck in Egypte werd opgepakt en hij dankzij Twitter met 1 SMS een grote groep mensen kon mobiliseren zodat een paar uur later zijn universiteit een Egyptische advocaat ter plaatse had.

Wie wanneer koffie drinkt, interesseert me niet. Maar wanneer je iets interessants meemaakt, en geen internet aansluiting in de buurt hebt om te bloggen (een uit de hand gelopen betoging bijvoorbeeld), dan lijkt twitter me best wel een handig medium.
